May 2018 - Central Lakes

We know how deeply you care about your land. That's why we've developed the Master Woodland Owner program and tailored the Central Lakes course especially for people who are interested in woodlands, healthy fisheries and water quality. This comprehensive education program provides you with the resources you need to care for your woodland and protect water quality.

Education to Fit your Schedule

Twelve self-paced modules are offered online, each containing exercises and group discussions. Complete the work on your schedule, while still contributing to group learning. Three in-person meetings will be held to help answer your questions and to provide an opportunity to meet with and learn from your neighbors.

Gathering Partners

The first in-person meeting of the Central Lakes course will take place at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd, MN on May 18, 2018 as one of the pre-conference workshops for the annual Gathering Partners of Natural Resources conference. Master Woodland Owner participants are welcome and encouraged to register for the conference, which runs from May 18-20, and includes many sessions and speakers that would be of interest to woodland owners, including an agroforestry field tour and a tree ID trek. Master Woodland Owner students are eligible for a $50 discount off full conference registration. Contact us for the discount code before registering for the conference.

Comprehensive Learning

After completing the Master Woodland Owner program, you will:

  • Have an action plan to accomplish one project on your woodland,
  • Know options for woodland management, and
  • Know who to contact if you need assistance.

It takes years to grow a healthy forest. We will help you cultivate, care for, and plan for the future of your woodland.

Registration

All landowners are welcome to register for this class at a reduced rate of $95 due to a grant funded in part through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources-Forest Stewardship Program. Each additional family member may register for $50. Please register at z.umn.edu/regmwo.

A reduced price of $45 is being offered to the first ten registrants with woodland property in parts of Crow Wing and Cass County and to Crow Wing County landowners with woodlands enrolled in SFIA or 2C. Landowners with land in the Federal and State designated Camp Ripley Sentinel Landscape, the Pine River Watershed, and the Tullibee Lakeshed are also eligible. Woodland owners may apply for the reduced price by completing a short form at z.umn.edu/mwoapp. We will provide applicants meeting the above requirements a discount code. Discount codes must be used at time of registration, and cannot be applied retroactively.  This reduced price has been made possible with funding from the North Central Landscape Committee.
